The Truth about "Compostable" Plastic Wrap

The Truth about "Compostable" Plastic Wrap

Spoiler alert: it's only compostable under the exact right conditions, and then it takes a year:

  1. it can only be composted at home, so households need a composter. Food waste pickups by Councils do not accept compostable cling film in their collections.
  2. So assuming you've got a composter in your garden, it then has to be under the "right conditions" (according to the makers of these films). That means it must be hot enough, and have enough moisture, and enough air in order to work.
  3. Then it takes up to a year for the cling film to break down.

Want to use the compost from your composter in under a year? Then you're digging uncomposted cling film into your garden.

Beeswax Wraps disappear in under a minute

When beeswax wraps are ready to be retired, simply use them as firelighters. The all-natural ingredients are non-toxic (unlike real firelighters) and they burn up into nothing in less than a minute.
