Soaked oats muesli covered in beeswax wrap

Mmm, Soaked Oats Muesli, our favourite delicious money-saving breakfast

Several years ago we visited Cyprus, and while at the hotel there, we were treated to a delicious and oh-so-satisfying breakfast option: Soaked Oats Muesli. We ate it every day and carried the recipe home with us (thanks to the hotel chef who very kindly parted with it).

Now that we're watching our pennies (like everyone else!), it occurred to us that our daily breakfast of choice is in fact, as economical as it is delicious.

  • there's no cooking, unlike porridge
  • it's much cheaper than boxes of cereal. 1/2 cup of oats and 1/2 a cup of milk makes a nice big bowl

There are many recipes for 'Overnight Oats' out there, and this is ours. It's super-easy and definitely doesn't need to soak overnight (though it can)! We regularly make ours an hour or so before we eat it.

  • Oats (rolled or quick-cook)
  • Milk (cow or otherwise, as you like). If you don't have quite enough milk to hand, you can make up the difference with water.
  • Raisins or other chopped dried fruit
  • Honey or Sugar, to serve (optional)

1/2 cup of oats is 1 serving, and it can be made up to 2 days ahead.

In a container with a lid, combine equal amounts of oats and milk. Add a handful of raisins/dried fruit and stir. Pop it into the fridge for at least an hour.

Spoon into bowls, add some sweetness if you like. We find that the raisins give it enough sweetness.
